This created the foundation around which the city was built. With
Klondike Gold Rush in 1847, the population grew by the thousands as

Yukon. Many of those people staying on or returned and settled in
Edmonton, and in 1904, the City of Edmonton was incorporated. In 1947,
with the major oil discovery in Leduc, a few miles southwest of the
city, Edmonton was established as a major hub for the oil and
petrochemical industries. Edmonton continues to grow at a rapid pace,
the economy is booming, with housing starts and construction permits
exceeding one billion dollars this year, up 26% from 2001.

Edmonton. The Symphony Orchestra is well-known throughout North America,
and hosts the finest performers, conductors and musicians from the
world's stages. They are two symphony halls in the city, the Winspear
being constructed in 1996. Current operas, popular music performances,
plays and musicals are presented several times a year in Edmonton, using
the best facilities and talent available anywhere in North America.
